Question:

What are the expenses a crew member for a cruise ship would have?

I'm wondering what extra expenses cruise crew members would have. Of course room and board are paid for, but are there other things to spend money on on the boat? What would monthly expenses run on the cruise ship?

For example, how much would a beer be in the crew bar?

  1. You can actually end up spending a lot.

    A beer is $1 usually.

Cigarettes are duty free on board and some ports are really cheap.

A lot of lines wont allow you to buy spirits, but some do, usually a bottle a week.

Internet is expensive, unless you are in a position with access to a PC.

Laundry of your uniform is free, but if you dont want to do the rest of your clothes there are always cabin stewards willing to do it for some $$$.

if you are a staff member and your cabin has a steward, you should tip him, at least $ 20 a month.

remember that if you have free time you will go shoreside too and that always means spending money.

You have 20% discount on the shops, spa, photo (sometimes only 10 on equipment) and there are crew sales often, so there´s always something to buy.

Another thing is after a bit you get really tired of the ship´s food, even when its good, which is not often, its boring to eat the same stuff all the time, so you end up buying things to eat, either on the shops onboard or some supermarket when  you have time off.

  2. crew members would pay for their personal products or habits.. cig's, snacks and off duty drinks. i am sure a crew member would get a discount. hard to tell you how much one would pay for drinks, each ship prices are different..you also should consider if you leave the ship and visit local areas, the cost of being a tourist...
