  1. a lot of changing in the society. You have to know the public opinion about, for example, their attitude to healthy life stile, to urbanisation, to political system, about the education.

  2. The Industrial Revolution! Before the Industrial revolution people largely worked on farms and lived in rural areas.  With the boom of industry, people started to move to the cities to seek employment in factories and the larger manufacturing sector.  This had a huge effect on cities like Chicago that could not handle the influx of people moving into it.  As a result of many people moving to cities, many social problems presented themselves such as disease, poor housing, sanitation problems, overcrowding and so on.  As a result of these growing urban problems, sociology became important because it is concerned with people and their environments. Sociologists felt it was sociology's job to come with solutions to these problems.

This is a more recent factor that has contributed to the development and growth of sociology. You should also read about Comte, Marx, and Durkheim (Founding Fathers of Sociology) to gain more explanation as to what lead to the development of sociology.  I hope this helps. Good Luck!

  3. People are curious by nature and always want to know why things happen the way they do.  That includes human self-study (Psychology) and naturally led to the study of groups of people (Sociology).
