  1. There are approx. 1,500 festivals each year in France so even if I knew them all there is no way I could list them all...

I guess the most famous one internationally is the Cannes cinema festival. Other famous ones that come to my mind now are:

    - Festival d'Avignon (theater)

    - Festival de la Bande dessinée in Angoulême (international comics festival)

    - Festival interceltique de Lorient (international Celtic festival)

    - Festival du cinéma américain (American film festival) in Deauville

    - Festival international du film fantastique (horror film) in Avoriaz

    Major rock/pop/variety festivals are:

    - Printemps de Bourges

    - Festival des Vieilles Charrues

    - Francofolies de La Rochelle

But there are many many more...

If by festivals you mean holidays, here is a list of public holidays: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holi...

  2. Galette de roi

  3. Sorry I'm french and I don't understand exactly what you mean, can you give more details about what you want to know ?

(do you want to know what festivals already happened this year in France ?)

    -------

Ahhhh, OK. I finally took my dictionnary and find out about you exactly wants to know. At least I will have learn one new word today... festival is not only festival, like the big ones ChocoBN talks about, but also what in french we call "fêtes" as Christmas, Chandeleur...

So, most of those festivals comes from our christian past (or present for those who beleive in god). I don't remember them all but I can try to list them (with a little help) :

    - 31 december - 1st january, as almost everywhere we celebrate the new year and eat good meals with friends or family

    - the first sunday of january we celebrate "Epiphanie" and eat a "Galette des Rois" (King's cake" wich is made of flaky pastry  filled with "frangipane" (something with almonds powder).

    - 2nd february we celebrate "Chandeleur" and eat pancakes

    - 14th february, it's Valentine's day, I think you know that too

    - 1st april : we make jokes to other, it's called "Poisson d'avril" (April's fish) and now marketing make us eat the same thing than "Galette des ROis but with a fish shape.

    - For Eastern we eat chocolate (chocolate chicken) and in my family we eat a leg of lamb with flageolets

    - 1st may, it's a day off, labour day, we just offer some lily of the valley

    - 8th may, we celebrate the end of WWII

    - ascension day

    - Pentecost

    - 21st june : it's summer and we have the "fête de la musique" (music day)

    - 14th july : national day

    - 15th august : Maria's day

    - 1st november : the day of the deaths (where you probably do something for Halloween - -see another question from a few days ago to know more)

    - 11th november : we celebrate the en of the WWI

    - 25 december : Christmas

But I think there are more festivals than those one, There must be some local festivals, and in family some more because of the different religion.
