  1. gas prices go down

  2. The groundhog sees its shadow.

    Just kidding.

There's no simple answer to this question.  A lot depends on what causes the economy to swing upwards.  Sometimes it might be consumer spending reviving.  Other times it might be a surge in corporate investment.  It could also be an increase in exports.  The U.S. economy is structurally in flux right now.  Consumer spending is diminishing in significance and exports seem to be rising (although their importance is masked by oil price increases that result in increases in imports).  So there's no easy benchmark for identifying the turnaround in the economy.

If you're wondering when to invest in the stock market, don't try to time your investments.  If it helps to give you peace of mind, try investing a bit each month.  This strategy--called dollar cost averaging--makes it easier to live with the ups and downs of the market.

  3. stock prices.

  4. consumer confidence increases.  GDP growth.
