What are the first signs of autism in children ages 18mo-2yr?

my son will be 2 at the end of september

does my child have autism because he shys away from strangers at first then is okay with them?

he still speaks jibberish does that also mean he is autistic?

are we born with autism?how do we get it? if someone in our family has it does that mean that sombody else in the family will get it?

he loves to be loved and has great eye contact his doctor said he might have it because of him not speaking almost nothing at all, i am on a waiting list a year long to see if he is really autistic...

what do you guys think does my son have autism? or is my doctor wack!

i found out that my great granfathers sisters son has autism and lives in a nursing home because of it. would my son have a chance of having it because of him?

  1. At two if he is speaking jibberish it could be possible. Also, there is a lesser form of it called Asperger's. Don't rule out hearing problems- this will cause the same problems. If he can't hear properly he won't talk properly. Also, if he can't hear it can make him shy away. Have him evaluated by a doctor because at two he should be talking.

  2. I would find a doctor that didn't have a year long waiting list.

If he is autistic, you don't want to wait a year to help him.

  3. Didn't you already ask this ?

Sounds like you want your kid to have autism by talking yourself into it !

  4. Hi, there are many parts to the autism spectrum and yes aspergers is one of them.  You might find the information found on the following website useful.

    www.ncac.gov.au/pcf/pcf_june08.pdf

There is an edition of "Putting children first" (on page 12,) with a very comprehensive article covering the following topics relating to autism:  What is autism?  autistic disorder, asperger's disorder, PDD-NOS, How does autism effect children?- communication difficulties, social difficulties, repetitive behaviours and restricted interests. Early signs of of possible autism - behaviour, communication, social skills, play, sensory.  Diagnosing autism, and choosing appropriate interventions for children with autism.

It also has a list of useful websites and references for further reading.

  5. Possible Indicators of Autism Spectrum Disorders

Does not babble, point, or make meaningful gestures by 1 year of age.

Does not speak one word by 16 months.

Does not combine two words by 2 years.

    Does not respond to name.

    Loses language or social skills.

    Some Other Indicators

    Poor eye contact.

Doesn't seem to know how to play with toys.

Excessively lines up toys or other objects.

Is attached to one particular toy or object.

    Doesn't smile.

At times seems to be hearing impaired.

  6. Autism is primarily a lack of interest in other people.  If your son makes eye contact, likes to cuddle, and points out what he wants, he is unlikely to have autism.  While speech delay is a symptom of autism, it's hard to say if a child as young as your son is truly speech delayed.  And besides, all cases of speech delay are not autism.  Sometimes speech delay is just speech delay.

Doctors are not sure why some children get autism, but there does seem to be a genetic component.  Unfortunately, autism is a popular diagnosis these days.  Children who would've been called mentally retarded two generations ago are now being called autistic without regard to the core symptoms of autism.  I don't think the autism diagnosis even existed when your great grandfather's sister's son was growing up.

  7. My 2 year old daughter talks jibberish all the time . .and no one can understand her. Well i can at times.

but she isnt shy she'll talk to any one who passes her.

i dont know about autism but my mothers friend had a boy who i used to babysit for when he was younger, he had autism. . Well he wasnt shy. . he spoke alot.. . and he is very very inteligent too.

so there must be different kinds of autism.

but.. . .  . keep the faith. . keep hope

And i pray your son will be ok.

    good luck.
