    For anyone that has ever touched any form of trigonometry, geometry, or calculus - the significance of pi becomes very clear, both in the ideal cartesian plane, and in the natural world. From a drop of water, to the planets and the stars, pi is a necessary constant in determining the circumference, area, or volume of any spherical or circular object - all that is needed is the diameter. However, pi is irrational, it's preciseness will never be fully uncovered.

    Fortunately, many people have spent countless hours formulating more digits of pi than will ever be necessary!  

    Formulating pi can be done in a variety of procedures, the arctangent method is one of the oldest.

    It follows that arctan 1 (radian) * 4 = pi

    Other methods such as the Ramanujan and the Guass-Legendre are used to gather more correct decimals per iteration of the respective formula.

    The first 51 digits of pi

    The important ones. For all practical purposes no more than 10 digits of pi are required for mathematic computation, however even with astronomically precise calculations no more than fifty are really necessary. Why is 51 so significant you might wonder, well it's not. The truth is that pi is easier to memerize in blocks - blocks of 10 are nice since that follows our counting system. To stay aesthetically pleasing, it makes more sense to write out 5 blocks of 10 of the respective digits. With the initial value of 3, that adds up to 51.
