Like if you had to train an MMA fighter, and could only teach him five holds, which would you do?

Me: 1) Straight arm bar 2) rear naked choke 3) triangle choke 4) omoplata 5) kimura

how about you?

  1. 1.  Rear naked choke

    2.  Triangle choke

    3.  Arm bar

    4.  Guillotine

    5.  Kimura

  2. Triangle - I'd have them work on setting up the triangle, when they can flow into a triangle effortlessly have them work on the choke or armlocks.

Rear Naked Choke - a must have submission in your toolbox. You first need to work on actually taking someone's back and stabilizing that position before trying to slap in the choke.

Juji Gatame (cross body armlock) - the king of armlocks

Ude Gatame (straight arm lock) and Ude Garame (bent/entangled armlock) - both are versitile and they flow into each other well, especially from a figure four grip.

That is my basic five. A good base to work with if the fighter truly internalizes these submissions and can apply them instinctively.

  3. I agree with the first 2 choices. My third one would be ankle lock. I'm not too fond of the omoplata because it's very hard to execute in an actual fight. Fourth for me would be the kimura. I also think all beginners should know the guillotine even though most experienced fighters would escape the move. It's a good move against newbies.

  4. rnc

    armbar

    triangle

    kimura

    heel hook

  5. Interesting question, what made you think of it?

I'd teach an armbar (juji gatame/ straight armbar/ whatever) since you can set it up from such a variety of positions.

The RNC, just 'cause it's essential for your MMA game.

The triangle choke, since it works so well with armbars.

The Kimura, 'cause it can also be used from several positions and sets up a good sweep.

And finally, I'd go for heel hooks, since they're so devastating. and it'd be stupid to ignore leglocks entirely.

I could live without the guillotine, since it's not a very high percentage move against more skilled fighters/grapplers.

But all of the others listed are essential, in my opinion. And even better, the armbar, triangle, and kimura are pretty versatile. Furthermore, armbars set up triangles, triangles set up armbars, RNCs set up armbars, and kimuras from sidemount can set up an armbar.

These moves are high-percentage and easily flow between one another. What more could you ask for?

  6. 1) arm bar

    2)rear naked choke

    3)ankle lock

    4)heel hook

    5)knee bar

i prefer the lower parts of the body

people just think your passing guard when you grab one

my fav move to pull tho

is a single leg assist take down into a knee bar

cause your first thought is pull guard and with my legs wrapped around yours and then i just apply the pressure
