The equilibrium level of equality tends to initially rise until the high achievers realize that their diligent work ethic results in raising the living standard of all of their compatriots, slackers included, to an ever increasing base level, rather then allowing them to reap the rewards of their extra effort.

Eventually, the achievers counter this inequity by either working outside the system or succumbing to mediocrity as the creed to live by.
