  2. Well, I've worked for Social Security for 32 years, but I don't know if this is the answer for which you are looking.

Social Security itself (officially Social Security Insurance) has retirement benefits, survivor benefits, disability benefits and auxiliary benefits (things like the wife of a retired guy getting SS herself when she's old enough - off of her husband's work record, or minor children getting Social Security because their Dad gets disability Social Security.) But Social Security also handles a program called SSI (Supplemental Security Income) for blind, disabled or elderly people whose income and resources are low. And they also sign people up for Medicare, although Medicare has its own agency now. Our webpage is pretty comprehensive: www.socialsecurity.gov.  By the way, always use ".gov", not ".com" for a U.S. government site because there are a lot of copycat addresses out there that end up costing you money. ".gov" is free.
