  1. Using the definition of an agglomeration as an extended city or town area comprising a municipality and any suburbs linked by continuous urban area, the four largest in terms of population are:

    TOKYO (including Yokohama, Kawasaki, Saitama), JAPAN;

    SEOUL (including Bucheon, Goyang, Incheon, Seongnam, Suweon), REPUBLIC OF KOREA;

    MEXICO CITY (including Nezahualcóyotl, Ecatepec, Naucalpan), MEXICO; and

    NEW YORK CITY (including Newark, Paterson), NEW YORK, U.S.A.

    I should hasten to add that the population agglomerations of

    MUMBAI (including Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane, Ulhasnagar), INDIA;

    DELHI (including Faridabad, Ghaziabad), INDIA; and

    SÁO PAULO (including Guarulhosulhos), BRAZIL could easily move into the top four when a more contemporary and accurate agglomeration census is available.
