  1. It's impossible for anyone to predict how much petrol/diesel will cost in December 2008 let alone 2009!!

One thing you should check thoroughly before deciding to drive is the minimum age for the driver.  Many car rental companies will not hire to drivers under 21 years, and for some it's 25, although this does depend on the country and rental company.  If they do hire to 18 year olds you'll find the insurance is sky-high.

Not only that, driving the distances you mention is a lot to ask of an experienced driver, let alone an 18 year old.  Have you looked at the distances on a map?

An alternative to driving or flying is to take the train.  Most people visiting Europe do this as it's economical, fast, and practical.  As you're not travelling for another year you might want to get a good guide book, work out an itinerary covering things that interest you, and look at train links between the cities/countries.

  2. Fuel prices in Europe are 2 or 2.5x higher than US fuel prices.

  3. Concerning the fuel rates, nobody here is a fortune teller. So we just can give you a hint on today's fuel rates. Recalculated in $ per US Gallon they are at about $6,50 in Greece, $8,50 in Germany, Italy, Denmark, and Sweden, $10,00 in Norway.

Hiring a car is another issue. You are writing you get a hire car in France. French companies start hire as of an age of 21 years and one year of driving experience.

In Germany, you may hire small type vehicles, like a VW Polo or a Peugeot 207, to start at an age of 18. You may drive to France, Italy, Finland, Sweden, and Norway, however not to Greece. The price for a weekly rent will start at $381,85. So you better verify your renting conditions and prerequisites concerning the age and the travel destinations (countries).

Furthermore you should be advised to rent a car with winter tyres, especially for Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

  4. I think you have to be 21 to hire a car in Europe, dear. Better check this before you travel, you can always get a Eurail pass. That would be safer anyway, as road signs in those countries are not always the same.
