Back in the old days, early 20th century, like 75 years ago, and before, people rarely bathed, it was actually considered by some to be unhealthy. Also trash and waste removal was almost non-existent, so it smelled bad, people especially. Men wore flowers in their lapels, women used perfumes and carried small bouquets called nosegays so they could smell the flowers instead of the people around them. When people gathered together the stink must have been overwhelming, so at weddings and other gatherings they brought in flowers to mask the odor. Now it is more decorative, and the flowers are sometimes plastic of fabric.

Decoration, atmosphere and fragrance! I think of fresh flowers as a sign of life, especially lilies, which are a sign of new life. Certain flowers and flowers in certain colors have specific meanings as well.
