Here's a strange bit of stock market history -

When a company offers stock to the public through underwriting investment banks, there is an overallocation of shares that is made available to the underwriters so that they can stabilize the price of the shares being offered in the days right after the deal.

The overallocation is called the deal's greenshoe. It's called that because the first time such a feature was ever used, it was in an offering of shares by (you guessed it) Green Shoe Company.
