I have a bad Vit D deficiency, I take a Vit D tablet every day and try to get sunlight, but it's still not real good - will Cod Liver Oil help? Are there side effects to taking too much Cod Liver Oil and/or Vitamin D?

  1. Perhaps you need fortified cod liver oil that has been fortified with extra vitamin D and vitamin A.  The capsules contain 4,000 IU of vitamin A and 400 IU of vitamin D.  One capsule a day is fine.  Two a day is perhaps overdoing it.  Vitamin D is very good for your bones but you need calcium (dairy products) as well.  Vitamin A is good for your skin and eye health.

Plain unfortified cod liver oil capsules only contain about 10% or even less vitamin A and D than the fortified capsules.

  2. Cod Liver Oil contains Vit A and D---only a teaspoonful is required to be taken every day--unlike Vit B and C , Vit A&D gets accumulated in the body and can cause serious side effects. The health benefits are that it protects the body from coughs and colds and is mostly given to growing children.
