What are the highlights of the Lorraine region of France?

Question

Planning a first trip to Europe (as a couple) and need to plan a short visit with a relative in the Lorraine region. What are the features of the area that we should plan to see or events we should plan to attend? Trip will be in June. Are there things that make the region worthy of an extra couple of days stay?
