  1. every team uses different calls for hits.

these are the ones my team uses:

1-low, first tempo set. quick and usually for the middle hitter, in the middle of the net

2-higher, second tempo, again in the middle

3-fast set, travels parallel to the net. 1/4 of the way from the left end of the net

4-high outside set, arcs to the left side of the net

5-arc, like a four, to the zone of a 3

    6-a faster 4

8-a 1 set, but behind the setter, almost directly behind and above his head

    9-high, arcing rightside set

slide- a 9 set for the middle hitter

    flat-a quick 9

    pipe-back row, middle hit

    green-backrow outside hit

    red- backrow rightside hit

             -----------------net-----------------

             OH              MH                RS/set

             RS/set       libero              OH

    OH- outside hitter

    MH-middle  hitter

    RS-riteside hitter

  2. well...

    some people play differently

i can see some other answers and now i KNOW i play different!

    the positions i play r...

    4--outside hitter

    2--middle

    5--opposite

    red--backrow opposite

    pipe(or white)--back row middle(libero DS)

    blue--backrow outside

i think that is the only way i could explain to u

  3. okay, assume you're standing on the end line of the court.  the outside hitter hits from the front left side, and is usually the main hitter.  setter can be anywhere, depending on the type of rotation you're playing.  they would want to set from the front right, and their base(or home) will be in the back or front right.   libero is the defensive specialist and there are different regulations depending on the level and league you are in for this position.  opposite is the setter's opposite- they play weak side, right side, whatever you want to call it.  they are also the 'back up' setter, if you will.  middle is middle front or middle back.  middle front hits and is usually the main blocker.  middle back is in the back row and defends the floor.
