  1. Water and minerals for a start...you need them so your body can perform properly (i.e. carry out metabolic reactions etc...). Minerals like sodium are important for nervous coordination, nitrogen is important for protein synthesis, calcium for strong bones and teeth, iron for haemoglobin (hence for oxygen transport in e.g. mammals)...the list goes on. Water is crucial for heat distribution (and distribution of basically every substance in a living body), and is a medium in which metabolic reactions take place.
