If you take the common ancestor as the origin point, then at some point in time the was a diversgence from common ancestor to main kingdoms known as animal, plant, bacteria. if you can imagine it goes on from their like a "tree roots" diverging. thats why we say monkey are close to humans and this is all done from comparing genes
