What are the jets underneath the diving board at the olympics for?

The jets that shoot out of the bottom of the diving board into the pool. What's the reason for them? Thanks!

  1. I believe it creates ripples so the divers can see exactly where the water is. Much like how the put down green branches/leaves for the aerial skiing. Without either, it can be tough to judge how much distance is between you and the water/snow.


  2. To make the water move.  Otherwise it would be very painful diving into the still water from high up.

    Still water can be very painful.
