I have a house in the Philippines, and notice ads for maids, houseboys and drivers. I have a maid. Would the houseboy have different job duties from the maid? And what does the driver do besides just drive?

  1. It all depends on the agreement between you and your house help. Any task can be assigned as long as both parties agree about it prior employment. Others are more skilled, others have less. Of course, you pay more for those who do more.

A maid, of course, cannot do skills intended for men like heavy gardening, fixing a leaking roof, carrying heavy loads, etc. Generally, maids do the cooking, cleaning, and other light chores.

A driver may do both the duties of the driver and the houseboy. Many drivers are adults, however, so they prefer driving only. It depends on the agreement prior employment. If he has other skills like carpentry, he can do that too but you have to pay more.

A houseboy often cannot cook well or nurse the baby or your grandma. Houseboys, generally, do the heavier tasks. As mentioned, a houseboy can drive, only if he has the skill and the license.

  2. Someone should write a book about this - and no, not me. There are probably as many answers to the question as there are households with staff. As the employer, YOU decide what staff you need and what duties to assign to each. "Live in" or "live out" is a major consideration, and will affect the duties you can assign. In general, a maid cleans and tidies the house, makes beds, serves meals and washes dishes. Many people expect their maid to do laundry and prepare snacks or simple meals. A houseboy traditionally is really your handyman and groundskeeper. His job is maintenance of the house and yard. Your driver looks after your vehicle(s) and garage. This includes cleaning the garage and vehicle(s), servicing and repairing both, driving and running errands.

  3. in the philippines, there are no job description for houseboys and maids. they are general factotum - means, they are employed to do a variety of jobs.

for drivers, the position is self explanatory. they drive the car - and of course the inherent duties to do the maintenance of the car... and to take care of the boss.

  4. -maid cooks, cleans, does the laundry, baby sits

-houseboy does the garden, tough household chores like repair and stuff like that

-driver drives your car, can also be a body guard

  5. the maids usually do the household chores like cooking, laundry, ironing, washing the dishes, cleaning the house and of course, maintaining the house.

they could also do extra labors like going to the grocery, looking after your needs, etc.

the yayas are different. they only look after the needs of the child. they man the child whenever the parents aren't around or sometimes even if they're at home - feed the child, bathe them, play with them, etc.

the houseboy normally looks after the chores outside the house such as gardening (if you have a garden), cleanliness of the compound, including the facade, the fixing of pipes, sinks or locks (take one who really knows more than they should) and could also carry heavy things like the couch, chairs, etc.

the driver goes with you of course. he looks after the car. he sometimes becomes your ally since he knows the area better than you. he also serves as your bodyguard.

  6. The houseboy will do whatever you want him to sicko.  The driver will get you the Ru-fies.

  7. Each will do whatever you want them to do.  Just don't let your driver use your car as a service and don't try to x*x your maid.  Also don't let your houseboy keep a sabong at your place.  Unless you have a big place you probably don't need all three.

  8. maid - cooking, washing, ironing, cleaning of house

houseboy - gardening, cleaning of yard, fixing things around house

driver - drive car, clean car and other car maintenance work
