  1. Watch surf lessons videos to learn techniques. Talk to fellow surfers that you meet at the beach. Each person has its own learning skills, I get encouragement and motivation by talking to surfers. They love to share their stories and they give tips. The more people you talk to, the more lessons you will learn because you are combining all the tips they give you. And most of all practice, practice, practice, that's the best way to be good at anything.

  2. Watch good surfers surf. I've been surfing for 3.5 years now and watching surfers really helped me out. Also, practice as much as possible, think of it like golf, the more you practice the better you will get and when you see those guys that do real quick turns remember that they have been surfing for at least 2-2.5 years. So don't get mad or anything if your not getting good fast because it real does take a while. As for exercise, do a lot of shoulder workouts, endurance training for the winter swells, chest and abs workout's for faster pop-up speeds and just keep practicing as much as possible. If you do see a surfer who is approachable, ask him for tips and tell him the things you are struggling with and that will help too. Please don't surf near the good surfers either because they will just look down upon you and just get in their way, makes it dangerous. Have Fun!

  3. well bro you just gotta get out there dont be scared and keep trying. Its educational to watch movies too

  4. Surfing is a state of mind.  I recommend that you learn as much as you can about the beach your at (waves breaking which way, reef location, sea life, best time of day to surf, etc...).  I always found "BALANCE" to be key.  Practice on solid ground first.  There is a certain spot on every surfers board that they are the most comfortable.  Like a car, only you know how to handle it and at what speed, control, weather, etc. you are most comfortable.  "TIMING" is second.  You either have an internal clock or you don't.  Observe other surfers and their timing, you'll sure to get the hang of it.  And last but certainly far from least please "TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS".  Theres no reason to rush things.  Take your time, only you know what your capable of.  It's okay to have boundaries and limits to start.  Set a goal (simple at first) each time you go out and let that be it for the day.  Main thing is to always find peace and have fun.  If not then it has defeated the purpose.  As a Hawaiian I was raised to believe surfing is a way of life, a spiritual awakening, not a sport  for fame, recognition, or money.

  5. Key skills to get good include endurance, arm strength, balance, and while not skills, the time to practice and a good break are also very important.  There are some other techniques used by pros to get better.  Visualization is a way to practice what you will do in your mind before you actually encounter the situation.  Watch enough waves that you learn how to read them and understand how they will break.  Finally, learn how to predict the surf conditions based on tides, wind direction, swell periods, and the bottom conditions at the places you surf.

  6. Balance is key. You must make sure that you get up on the board at the right time and you need to have strong leg muscles to keep the board from controlling you. Make sure that you are not right on the edge, front, or back, and thatyou're weight is not too centered, or you will wipe out.

  7. Ummm well all the things the The HB snake said are great and very useful but I think it is all about just going out there and not thinking about it too much follow

intuition when it comes to catching a good wave also I think surfinf some what has to come nautral you should be able to feel it ! just go out there and surf !!! Theres no "real" rules >_<
