The greenhouse effect is the process in which the emission of infrared radiation by the atmosphere warms a planet's surface. The name comes from an incorrect analogy with the warming of air inside a greenhouse compared to the air outside the greenhouse. The greenhouse effect was discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824 and first investigated quantitatively by Svante Arrhenius in 1896.[1]

The Earth's average surface temperature of 14 °C (57 °F) would otherwise be about -19 °C (-2.2 °F) in the absence of the greenhouse effect.[2] Global warming, a recent warming of the Earth's lower atmosphere, is believed to be the result of an enhanced greenhouse effect due to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In addition to the Earth, Mars and Venus have greenhouse effects.

  3. I'm sorry and this is not going to be a popular answer but it's all a big con.

About every 100,000 years, the climate warms up for 15,000 to 20,000 years before cooling into another ice age. We are currently 18,000 years into an 'interglacial period'.

It is quite normal for global temperatures to rise and fall in cycles.

Earth's geological record shows that temperatures rise and fall in response to changes in Earth's orbit and in response to changes in the amount of energy radiated by the Sun.

The focus is on carbon dioxide, but what is known from studies of the polar ice caps is that the global temperature is not controlled by the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

This means that reducing the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide right now won't reduce the global temperature for hundreds of years.

Yet the relentless stream of propaganda about the necessity for stopping climate change continues.

Stopping the release of ALL greenhouse gases from ALL human sources will reduce the amount in the Earth's atmosphere by just 0.28%

You will notice that 'global warming' has now become 'climate change' - which means that no matter in which the direction global temperatures go they can still blame human intervention.

Carbon trading and making systems 'carbon neutral' is all about politics and exploitation of taxpayers. It has absolutely nothing to do with climate science.
