  1. The association usually makes those rules but the city of Chicago also has made this illegal because fo fires on these wood balconies. They don't enforce it though. I would recommend just grilling outside on the ground even if it is in a courtyard or side lot. It is far safer and you will avoid the fines.

  2. The Fire Department says that you must grill on the common areas.  Especially if there is a neighbor or any structure above your grill or your balcony. /

  3. I was unable to locate any specific requirement preventing the use of charcoal fired grilles on wooden balconies, but common sense dictates that one would not use such a device on a wooden deck.

Hot coals can slip out of the vent openings and lodge in the gaps between wood boards.  If you have not yet figured this out, that is not a good combination.  Many buildings have been destroyed by this exact situation.  If YOUR grille embers start such a fire and the entire building is destroyed, guess after whom the insurer will come.  Yes, that would be YOU, and I would hope that you would have several million dollars of insurance coverage to pay for such damage.

  4. I am sure that the condo board will have laws prohibiting all grills expect electric on a balcony based upon the high risk for fire , very common prohibition
