What are the laws for someone in Maryland driving a scooter/moeped?

I'm in high school. There are several kids that have scooter type vehicles and they ride them on the street. One kid told me that you do NOT need a license of any kind if your scooter is a 50CC engine. I am currently in Montgomery County, Maryland. Any knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  1. Hi Ale S,

I do not believe this is accurate.  You would need either a moped license or a regular drivers license.  According to Maryland law, you may not have to register the vehicle, but you would still need one of the above licenses to operate it as a street legal vehicle.  Based on what you have mentioned, I can't say whether we are talking about a moped or a motor scooter as both can have a 50cc engine so I can't say which license you would need.  But, I definitely think you would need one or the other.

    Hope this helps,
