Question:

What are the laws on underage drinking?

My friend, who's 15, goes to a club in town with his dad every Friday night, where his dad buys him alcohol to drink. Is this classed against underage drinking? I know drinking is largely at the discretion of your parents at that age, but is that just inside their own home or is it actually illegal on licensed premises? Additionally, I'm worried the police are aware of this. How seriously are they likely to take it?

  1. It is illegal, even in a private home.  It can be a serious crime and could have serious consequences.

  2. Yes, if your friend was charged he'd be charged with ''Minor Consumption" and dad would be charged with ''Contributing to a Minors Delinquency".  It shouldn't be ''up'' to the parents to decide.  No parent should give that option to their child or encourage underage drinking.  Its illegal no matter where this takes place.  You should call the police and put in a ''tip'' of an adult supplying a minor with alcohol.  Additionally, the establishment should be punished for allowing ''the adult'' to supply the minor with drinks.

  3. 1. You can't do it.  2. His dad could be ticketed for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.  3.  The establishment where they drink could be fined also.  4. Its stupid, your body is not done growing at that age, and drinking doesn't help the process. 5. The police should not be taking it likely if they are aware of it, as there are legal ramifications if they are aware and do nothing about it.  No matter where you are underage drinking is illegal, licensed establishment or not.

  4. Depends on the laws of your unknown country and/or State.

In the USA, for example, it is illegal for a 15 year old to drink with his parents in a club in ANY State. In a few States you can drink *with your own parents* under the age of 21 in a licensed restaurant, and in 'most' States you can drink in your OWN home under 21 either in your parents presence, or with their consent. In a few States it's illegal to drink under 21 under ANY circumstances.

In the UK, a 15 year old may drink alcohol if with his OWN parent, in a restaurant, where the alcohol is served with a meal. He must be 16 to drink  with his parent in a bar or club, or to buy beer, porter or cider with a meal if on his own. His access to alcohol becomes unrestricted at 18.
