What are the laws regarding a gun in your car in Texas?

Does anyone know is it now legal to keep your weapon under your seat without a concealed handgun license? Do you need to keep gun separate from the ammo?

In 2007, the TX legislature modified the law to specify that anytime you are going from your place of residence, to your motor vehicle, and from your motor vehicle to your place of residence (even a temporary residence) you may carry your firearm concealed without a permit provided you can legal own a firearm.

    This is in line with the TX law stating that you may carry a concealed firearm in your car while "traveling". The legislature modification defines traveling as anytime you are going to, returning from, or in the vacinity of your vehicle.

    The answer that you must have a CHL in order to carry a firearm in your vehicle is just flat wrong.  For reference, pls check the TX DPS website and search for "traveling and firearm".

    OF course if you cannot legally possess a firearm, or are under age 21, these rules do not apply.

  2. It is illigal to carry a weapon under the seat without a concealed handgun permit.  To get the answers you need contact your local law enforcement agency.  They will happily answer these questions and put you on the right track of steps to follow for safely caring a weapon in your vehicle.  

  3. It is now legal to conceal a handgun in your vehicle and use it to protect you, your passengers or your content when reasonably threatened.  This was passed on 05.26.07 and became effective on 09.01.07 and is known as the "Motorists Protection Act".
