What are the legends related to solar eclipse?

I have heard about many legends of solar eclipse.

Like In China they say that one dragon eats up the sun or say swallow the sun.

What are the legends in your country

    An eclispe is caused by a snake demon, Rahu, who eats up the sun.Rahu drank the divine nectar to make him immortal. But he was behaded before the nectar reached its throat. The rest of the body died while the head is immortal. This is the why Rahu's head returns to swallow the sun during eclipse. After the sun passes through his neck the eclipse lifts.

    This is a legend in India.

    The sun and the moon loved each other and were very close to the earth.But they were not allowed to do this. ON eclipse they were allowed to touch each other's shawdow and then again go apart.

    IN China

    The Cinese people believed that a dragon would come and swallow the sun on this day.

    People believed that a serpant came from the sea rosed to the sky and swallowed up the sun


  2. The Moon was represented by a mirror in China. During an eclipse, people beating on mirrors is a very old tradition. It was believed that a dragon swallowed the Moon during an eclipse and beating the mirrors would cause the dragon to cough it up and return it to the sky.

When either are caught, there is an eclipse. When this happens, the people on Earth rush to rescue the Sun or Moon by making as much noise as they can in hopes of scaring off the wolves.

    The Serrano Indians of California believe an eclipse is the spirits of the dead trying to eat the Sun or Moon. So during an eclipse, the shamans and ceremonial assistants sing and dance to appease the dead spirits while everyone else shouts to try and scare the spirits away. Meanwhile, everyone avoids eating food with the idea that it would starve the spirits out.
