Question:

What are the likely repercussions for an 18 year old's reckless driving ticket in Michigan?

Tonight a friend of mine got pulled over for going down a one-way street. The street was clearly labeled with "DO NOT ENTER" signs. The cop gave him a reckless driving ticket but did not indicate anything about speeding. Also, he cut through a parking lot to avoid a light prior to going down the one-way street. In Michigan, the offense is worth six points. He has zero points on his record but a prior five-over speeding ticket.

Any advice on how to go about dealing with this? Any guesses as to the repercussions?

Thanks.

  1. His license will probably be suspended or restricted for 6 months.  It will cost a lot of money to pay the ticket and to reinstate the license after the 6 months.  Then, for the next 2 years, he will have to pat the new "Michigan Drivers Responsibilty Fee", which will be probably $500.00.  If he doesn't pay, his license will again be suspended until he does pay.  His insurance will go up, and the after all is said and done, he will pay like, $1500.00.

  2. He is going to receive an expensive ticket, and his insurance will sky rocket as he will go into the high risk level, that will not drop off for several years.

  3. It totally depends on the county you live in...some are tougher than others. They tend to be hard on the young guys..fight the ticket...He has a pretty good record, so go to court and plead not guilty, tell the judge what happened and maybe he will give him a brake...
