What are the limitations/requirements for Americans living in Spain?

I'm not completely sure what you mean. They only think you need to come to Spain is a visa. If you stay less than 3 months you will not need a visa as you are considered a tourist. If you want to live here, you'll need a visa, check your nearest Spanish embassy/consulate where they can give you the information and give you the visa.
