i used to believe that mixing politics and the Olympics was basically wrong and needed to be avoided.. that the Olympics should be about the sport.. not about politics..

but if your basic charter involves politics.. how can you have the olympics housed in a country with the human rights record of china... and still have any ethics at all?

Is it ethical to boycott the Beijing Olympics on the ground of its poor handling of Tibet?

No, it is not ethical. First and foremost, Olympics is an sports event. Why do people get so caught up in politics anyway? They should've raised their concerns long ago during the selection of host city.

Second, what gresnab said is totally out of context. I believe that the article he cited only pertains to sportsmanship; that no athlete shall discriminate another on account of his "country or a person on grounds of race, religion, POLITICS, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement".

Third, the Olympics is not the proper venue to discuss the internal affairs of a state. We have the United Nations whose task is to oversee international relations. The Olympics does not have this function whatsoever. This boycott comes only short of meddling with the sovereignty of China which have all the right to do what it sees is fit.

My sympathy lies with the Dalai Lama, but frankly, let they resolve their conflict in the proper manner.

The hypocrisy of a boycott. Most of the complaints about China can be seen in the USA, Russia, Britain and all other empires.
