  1. hdmi is a single cable-all in one connection

component is 3 rca cables a red, green, and blue and is lower quality

  2. HDMI is a 19 conductor loom/bundle that carries digital video information at resolutions up to 1080p and digital audio signals with resolutions up to DolbyDigitalHD uncompressed. It also carries the necessary HDCP copy protection data between components to allow for a 1080p signal to pass. It also carries the EDID information so that the TV will automatically set itself for the correct scan rate, pixel count, etc.

Component, as it's commonly used (y pbpr) is 3 two-wire cables that carry analog brightness, vertical sinc and horizontal sinc on the green cable, analog blue information on the blue cable, and analog red information on the red cable. Green is calculated inside the TV set.

HDMI is always better for convenience and aesthetics. HDMI is likely to remain the only way to see 1080p signals. HDMI, in most cases, including your Bravia, is the better choice.
