  1. Most cities in the USSR followed a strict model. There were many similar, cheap apartments around the suburbs for the workers, with large factories and shops dispersed. The inner areas were more "cultural" and hosted events, major business, research and government. The effects of this can still be seen today in St. Petersburg, Moscow and other major cities, with mile after mile of degraded, cluster run down buildings.
