1. If this is for a school project, I would also look into the reasons why what we do isn't enough...such as what peoples and countries are actually helping out, what orgs are doing versus what they are spending on self--overhead/administration....some good sites are www.poverty.com, www.freerice.com, www.nothingbutnets.net, and www.charitynavigator.com.

  2. The reasons for a crisis in food supplies are many, and when they culminate, it leads to a "perfect storm" where food becomes scare. Three of the most common reasons that, when they happen simultaneously, cause widespread hunger

-- a change in the security situation (civil war, violent political protests, a coup, etc.)

-- several years of severe weather (drought or flood)

-- corruption, where funds and support for the raising of animals and crops for food are diverted to arms or income-generating activities (like mining) for a minority of people

For instance, Zimbabwe was once a "bread basket" of Africa, and not only fed it's own people, but exported a great deal of food resources to other countries. But because of years of corruption, political strife, and a land re-distribution program that gave furtile land to friends of the dictator with no experience in farming, many people of Zimbabwe are starving.
