  1. Ketones have the general structure R-CO-R' - where R and R' are alkyl groups (but not hydrogen).

Ketones can be reduced to secondary alcohols.

They are not readily oxidised (unlike aldehydes, R-CO-H) which provides the tests for differentiating between aldehydes and ketones (e.g. silver mirror test)

They will undergo nucleophilic addition reactions with a number of reagents: HCN being particularly important as this leads to a way of making alpha-hydroxy acids.

    OK?

  2. Ketones are a group of organic compounds with a C=O bond somewhere in the middle of the molecule. The simplest one is propanone, also known as acetone. This is a colourless liquid, which is highly miscible/soluble in water. It also serves as an important solvent in its own right, and is the main ingredient of nail polish remover, dissolving the polish. It is also highly flammable...

Another curious property of this particular ketone is its florescent nature when exposed to UV light ... the stuff glows ;)

Of course, a further property of this ketone is it characteristic smell...it is used in paint thinners, and has a particular smell.

Chemical formula of acetone ->   CH3COCH3

    Hope this helps ;)

  3. it has a CO group and forms a part of the carboxylic acid

  4. If you go to this URL it should give you all the information you need:

    Hope this helps.
