Question:

What are the main things interviewers look for in a group interview?

I have to go to a group interview with teambuilding exercises soon. Have been to one before but I am not really confident in these scenarios. Also it is hard to work as a team when no-one knows eachother and the task at hand seems to have nothing to do with the actual job you are applying for.

I went to one of these a couple of weeks ago and NO-ONE worked together everyone did their own thing even though not one person had the right way to complete the exercise.

Any tips on how to make myself stand out in a positive way?

By the way , in the workplace I don't have these problems, am quite capable to lead a team or work as part of a group.

  1. They are looking to assess how you interact and build relationships with other members of the workshop because it gives them an indication of how you will adapt to a changing environment / new position.  If you adapt quickly and are still able to prove you meet the other key criteria they need you to have to successfully fulfil the position then you will impress.

When you are in that situation focus on how to build productive relationships.  Understand everyone's strengths and weaknesses and then organise your team and tasks according to those strengths and weaknesses.  It will lead to a more positive outcome and you will find the tasks will be completed successfully due to more productive/collaborative relationships between people.

  2. oh i hate those, whoever seems to be the strongest, most outspoken

  3. normally in a group interview the interviewers are looking for certain things: who is a leader and jumps up and volunteers or takes control of the conversations, who are the followers and sit back and let others take over, who are the combative ones who fight for a voice, and who are the mousy ones who just sit and watch everything.  it really gives the employer the opportunity to see how everyone interacts and who stands out.
