  1. if what you are doing is sensitive to timing, its better for you to glance at the instructions and recall the specifics from memory than to read the instructions completely, because you won't take as much time figuring out what to do in the next step.


  2. You can think about what you're doing ahead of time, so you can get a plan in your mind for the sequence of doing it.  If you need reagents chilled or warmed, you can do that before you need them, so when you do, you have them ready.  You can think about the reason for each of the steps, and the overall flow of the experiment, so when you do it you aren't just following the recipe.  You'll make fewer mistakes that way, because you'll understand why you are doing each step.
