  1. Aging aircraft. Rising fuel and insurance costs.

  2. For a very basic answer, I would say that the United States Government budget limitations  are a leading factors affecting the industry. Less orders, thus less research. The Aerospace Industry is nothing compared to what it was twenty-five years ago, and the private sector can't compete.

On the other hand, new materials and technology have improved.

It just seems this Country is going forward two steps and back one.

  3. Rising fuel costs and more regulations that cost more money to maintain.... Much of the economy just can't afford to pay for travel because air travel is so expensive now a days... The airlines need to concentrate more on satisfying buisness travelers and less on the one a decade traveler because lets face it, the airline is going to make more profits off of the Buisness guys traveling last minute

  4. achieving perfect balance between service quality (food, check-in, baggage claim, first class lounges etc.) and fare price while making profits to pay for the maintaining and operating of the equipment(airplanes, their replacement parts, new aircraft etc).

that was what it used to be.

nowadays, for airlines, it's staying alive against the impossible fuel prices. Service quality isn't even in the equation anymore. It more like at the bottom of the list along with lost luggage recovery.
