What are the major current events when relating to the US and foreign affairs?

What should I know to have a meaningful conversation with some very intelligent people? I've been reading the newspapers and such, but what should I focus on?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Talk about the Darfur region of Sudan and the genocide going on there.  The UN and African Union are putting the president of Sudan, al-Hashir, on trial soon for crimes against humanity.
