What are the major differences between thoroughbreds and quarter horses?

I know that quarter horses are different in build, but what about the racetracks?

  1. you had the right answer first time from the other guy - quarter horses are bred specifically for races of a quarter mile hence the name quarter horse , they do have thoughbred in their bloodlines though , its a bit like the difference between a sprinter who runs really quick off the mark over a short distance and a marathon runner who runs best over a long distance each is trained with the job in mind and quite often the build will determine whether the horse or person would be quicker i.e the lighter they are usually the quicker off the mark they are the heavier the slower off the mark etc parentage also plays a part in the horses breeding and can help decide the best qualities to try to incorprate into the foal via the stallion chosen for the mare


  2. Their bloodlines are different, quarter horse was bred for explosive speed and agility and thoroughbreds have speed and stamina, but generally not as quick as a Qh. from the start. But you do get crossovers tbs. that are quick as he_ _ck from the start and Qh.'s that can compete over a half mile or 4 to 5 furlongs.
