  1. at least algebra

  2. The average American functions in their daily life on skills learned by 5th grade.  Most newspapers and magazines are written at that reading level.  Basic household accounting is nothing more than add, subtract, multipy, and divide.

Of course you're right - it depends on your job.  But I'm just talking about regular, daily life here, entry-level job, regular bills, etc.

  3. You don't have to be an Einstein in math, but simple basic understanding and calculations will be very helpful in life.

For example, you need to check your balance in bank every month. How much you spend, and how much you get. When you want to put some money in deposit account or investment plan, you can estimate the return in, let's say, a year. When you buy things, you can compare two difference package of similar item, e.g. single package of toothpaste A, and dozen-package of same brand, and then calculate whether it helps you to save money by buying bigger package-but keep in mind your normal usage. When you want to take a loan, you can calculate whether the interest kill you or not.

Those are not very difficult, but are very useful ;)

  4. add, subtract, divide, multiply, percentages and fractions.

the rest is not really needed very often. All the time you have to figure out 20% off, or which unit price is less, like buying in bulk may not be a better deal than waiting for a sale....
