What are the methods to check the level of Water Pollution?

I believe bacteria count is done under a microscope, and other materials detected by electrochromatography(?).  I'm pretty sure that's not the right term, but it's near that.  They burn substances and detect the light frequency profiles that makes.  Each chemical element emits a particular profile.

Are you just curious or are you concerned?  Don't be about water in the US.  Unless it's private well water it's constantly checked and among the cleanest in the world.  That's why we don't have the water born epidemics any more.  That's thanks mostly to chlorine and modern sewage systems.  Most other contaminants are pulled out by filtration, and efforts are being made to reduce them at the source.

*  Pollution by what?  There are poisons (like cyanide or PCB's), oxygen depleters (sulfites, nitrites), fertilizers that make algae grow too fast (nitrates, phosphates), and organisms.  The US government publishes what the industry refers to as "The Blue Book".  It is a living, growing work of scientific methodology for determining concentrations of pollutants in water.
