  1. These kinda sound like lame questions.... I am a collegiate VB player and there is no "free zone" term in volleyball.

A player can pass a "Free Ball" however... this refers to when a player bumps the ball over the net (rather than spiking it)  It is called a free ball because it is a "free" and easy opportunity for the other team to make a play and score.

So... if you are considering a "Free Zone"  it is anywhere a player can bump the ball and keep it in bounds on the opposing teams side.  (30ft x 30ft)

  2. There is absolutely a term "free zone" in Volleyball. I'd like to know what college "red dress" plays for. I think that answerer might be pulling your chain. :)

According to rule 1.1 in the FIVB rule book:

    "DIMENSIONS

The playing court is a rectangle measuring 18 x 9 m, surrounded by a free zone which is a minimum of 3 m wide on all sides.

The free playing space is the space above the playing area which is free from any obstructions. The free playing space shall measure a minimum of 7 m in height from the playing surface.

For FIVB World and Official Competitions, the free zone shall measure a minimum of 5 m from the sidelines and 8 m from the end lines. The free playing space shall measure a minimum of 12.5 m in height from the playing

    surface."

You can find other information (possibly in Spanish although I could not see it) at the link below:

Of course, I would be careful of openly asking homework questions on Yahoo Answers. ;)
