Question:

What are the most affordable and quality gesso brands?

I'm currently a student learning how to paint. After my first semester in painting we had to buy some Gesso and I bought a gallon for $50. It went to half a gallon after two coats on my 6ftx4ft and 32'x44' paintings. Like most students I'm trying to save a few bucks. I figure I might not end up keeping some of might paintings. But I also know that I could make something that somebody might like.

Anyways I think I got my point across, so far I've found only

and

.

I use oil paints. Are those worthy alternatives? Anybody with experience with those brands? Should I stick to my $50 gallons? Are there any other brands and manufacturers I should consider?

  1. You should have no issues with artists quality materials you buy online at places like blick and cheap joes.  Other places to look are Daniel Smith (made here in Seattle and less than $40 a gal.) and ASW (Artist supply Warehouse), Jerry's Artarama.  Do not skimp on canvas preparation. .. . you never know when you will paint that one painting that makes it!   I'd consider going with the Joe's stuff at $22 a gal!
