  1. Demelza House Children's Hospice in Kent, England. I've been donating to them for 5 years. Every little bit helps.

Just £1 could pay for a child's oxygen mask

    • A little more than £5 could pay for a 10min? telephone conversation at 3am with a parent who 'just wants to talk' and it costs £10 for the time it takes to change a drip

    • £25 could pay for a music therapy session for one child or £100 for an evening's respite care

    • £879 could pay for a child's respite care in the hospice for one day and it costs £1,000 to provide 70 hours of hospice at home care

    • £3,000 could pay for children to receive a year of play therapy from a children's nurse throughout school term time giving Mum and Dad a much needed break.

    • It costs £15,000 for a Care Assistant for one year and £35,000 could 'Adopt a Nurse' for one year.

They need 1.5 million a year to keep their services going, and in December of 2000, they were in danger of closing. Thankfully there have been lots of fundraisers, and lots of check coming in, to keep this wonderful place going. They receive no funding from the government, and rely strictly on donations, and fundraising efforts.

  3. I like Doctors without Borders. They have won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work.

  4. We are partial to what are called children's homes.  In reality they are, for the most part, repair depots where dysfunctional kids from dysfunctional homes are taught ways to deal with their peers and parents.  Not all residents are "repaired" and lead functional lives but the vast majority do and the benefits to society in any term you want to examine are enormous.  Just helping a child stay out of jail as an adult is a huge dollar saving to society.  And the social effects are huge also in reduced teen pregnancy, reduced drug use, and on and on.  In most of these, the bulk of the operating funds are donated and they all can use volunteers and dollars.  Monies given are wisely invested in youth.
