  1. Never been to Costa Maya. But cruised to Cozumel and did our  own activities ( WE NEVER BOOK THROUGH CRUISE SHIP). We took a taxi to Chankanub State Park. Not sure about the spelling.There is a beach with snorkling, jet skis and much more. We swam with the dolphins it was lots of fun.  We also took a carraige ride at dark and ate at the Hard Rock Cafe.

  2. Don't forget about Playa del Carmen.  It is just a ferry ride from Cozumel.

    I highly recommend the Cavern by Jeep tour.  You drive a Jeep through Mexico to a cave with an underground river.  You get to swim in the underground river.  It is amazing.  They don't even let you touch the water in caverns in the US.  Then back into the Jeeps and you are off to a private beach to have an authentic Mexican meal.  It was great!

    I also recommend the Dolphin experience in Cozumel.

    The adults enjoyed the submarine ride but my teens were a bit bored.

    Some folks book with the cruise line other book directly.  We have always booked through the cruise line.  Although we pay more, these operators have been checked out and I feel better being with them in a foreign country.

    Take plenty of $1, 5 and 10 in US dollars to shop in the open air markets, taxis and to tip the shore excursion personnel.

    Part of the fun of shopping in Cozumel is bartering with the vendors.  But that only works in the small shops and open air market.  The taxis will try to take you to the "mall".  You won't get the best deals there.

    Take a large beach bag on the trip with you for shore excursions.  Most of the excursions require a towel plus you will want something to hold all of your shopping loot!

  3. I just got back from both those ports . Costa Maya is  just a shopping drop off. The ship offers tours, which I recommend taking rather than doing it on your own, the Uvero beach is awesome. The only concern I had in Costa Maya were the big guards on top of the buildings with bigger guns, not a very welcoming sight. Cozumel is much busier and you can plan your own thing. We did a jeep 4X4  tour in December and when we were there last week we took the tour into Tulum to see the ruins which was awesome, they even have swimming down the cliff, They also had guards with guns. I guess I'm too used to living in the USA , the guns are a bit unnerving. Have fun

  4. water things and shop.

  5. I agree with visiting the state park in Cozumel. you can rent mopeds usually in town and drive there  there is a magnificant area for snorkling you feel like you are in an aquarium with beautiful tropical fish, but you're not it is open to the ocean.. also the other side of the island is beautiful! Not many crowds there. my wife and i were there before the new cruse pier was built and the town was quaint. On a recent visit however the town has gotten rather busy.. costa maya is just a cruse port with not much to too do other than shop for trinkets. we did rent a golf cart  and drove around for a while .. however there is not much to drive to. ..that said it is still a nice little port to relax in .....enjoy!!!

  6. diving, it's one of the top spots{cozumel}

    h**l that's worth the trip alone!
