What are the most important documents, paperworks, or form of ID a person should always have?

I ask this question coming from a person planning on moving to a new city, state, and perhaps a new country to start a new life. Is one of the most important document/paperwork a person's birth certificate? Passport? ID? Anything else I missed? Can they be accessed in some form via the internet?

Well, in New York City, it is against the law to walk around without a New York State I.D. I don't suggest you walk around with your birth certificate or social security card though. You might loose it and become a victim of identity theft!!!! Good luck in your travels though!!!!

You should always have a birth certificate, this is essentially who you are.  A passport is good to have in these days and times, especially if you plan to immigrate (you will have to have one because this is where they put your visa).  You don't want to carry these items on your person so another form of ID is recommended for everyday use.  

A social security card is the governments favorite form of ID so one should have this when applicable.  

Other documents you should always keep:  marriage and divorce certificates, court records, college transcripts, titles and deeds, and insurance policies.

You can use the internet to find out how to get copies of these items but for as far as getting a copy straight off the internet---NO.  These items are your personal documents and you don't want them floating around out there for every bozo to have access to them.

If you had any law charges or infractions, make sure you have waivers and clearances of guilt and or indebtness. They have a way of catching up to you sometimes.

Fingerprints, DNA, total criminal record files, and immigration does check authenticity of a birth certificate--especially if you're middle eastern--If you're not, you'll be fine.
