I will be on a conservation trip in the wilderness of Lithgow, NSW, Australia for two weeks. We will be getting groceries periodically and will be preparing our own food. I was wondering what types of food I can grab at the market that will pack the biggest nutritional punch. I am a vegetarian so they must follow that. What are the best nuts, fruits, veggies, etc to keep me healthy those two weeks?

  1. Ryvita, 9 grain vitawheat, good quality muesli bars, protein bars, walnuts, almonds, cashews, brazil nuts, pepitas, sunflower seeds, dried fruit such as apricots, sultanas, raisins, figs, paw paw, canned beans, long life milk, isotonic drinks and plenty of water!

  2. Protein bars. They are nutritionally sound and taste pretty good. You can buy them at any national grocery chain.

  3. Wow, I would hardly call Lithgow "wilderness".

Trail mix or wild nut mix (i.e.) an all organic sprouted mixture of almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, wild Persian figs and Tibetan Goji berries.

Even a couple of handfuls will fill you up and give you sustained energy.

    Yummy too.

    .

  4. Unless you're going to be carrying a cooler with you, vegetables are probably a bad idea.  Dried fruit is a good option since you don't need to store it in any special way.  You can bring nuts and seeds with you to keep you going in between meals, and these will pack a lot of calories in a small space, so that is good.

As far as particular fruits, nuts, etc.... it really doesn't matter, just bring what you like.  You're not going to be gone long enough to develop any severe (or even slight) deficiencies, so choose which dried fruits, nuts, and seeds you like the best and take those with you.  You can also just mix them together and put each serving in a separate bag so you never eat too much or too little.

  5. this past winter I went camping in Canada, burrrr...

My staple items that satisfied me where:

    Oatmeal

    Nuts (almonds, peanuts)

Granola (they have granola with added soy protein clusters)

Trail Mix (nuts, fruit chocolate- will hold you over when hungry)

Dried Fruit (I didnt eat much dried fruit, only because the sugar spikes are good when its cold)

    Soy Jerky

    Chocolate Milk Powder (yumm)
