  1. I have seen varied student backgrounds and it all boils down to the rapport that is developed between the student and the teacher. I attended a workshop called Capturing Kids Hearts about 2 years ago. the progam focused on developing the connection so that the student wants to work for you.

I have also seen the other side where students are taught by fear. That is not my style but, students always say that the class is fun and that they learned a lot from the class.

SES background really does not factor into this. I have seen varied backgrounds with varied outcomes. Parental and community involvement is another key factor. The more you involve them, the better. Also, focusing on test results are important to the school but, kids want to have fun too so, there shoudl be a balance between the two for motivation. For example, offering electives that create options for the students instead of always looking at each kid as college material. Not every kid wants to go to college.

  2. What a complex question!

To try to focus in and simplify, I think it can be summed up this way:

    1) student health (mental, physical, emotional)

    2) socio-economics of the town and school (simple but true; more money, more supplies, more technology, more support staff, more teachers)

    3) teacher rapport with the kids.  At least at the elementary level, I really think that the spirit, warmth and energy of the teacher makes a huge difference

  3. One would be their family life.  If a students comes from a family that don't care about their education (reading with them at night, helping with homework), then that affects the child.  A child who has well rounded supportive family that feeds them breakfast in the morning, will succeed.  I only say this because I have had many students that come to school with no breakfast in them, or no lunch to eat.  They are starving and their little brains do not work without food.
