What are the most well-known charity organizations?

I'd say the most well-known is probably the International Red Cross/Red Crescent, which is well-known in pretty much every country on earth. Other well known charities in the US are the United Way, the Salvation Army, Goodwill.

But keep in mind that the most well-known charities are not necessarily the best ones. Charity Navigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org/ ) is a good website to look at if you want to see how good a charity is.
