  1. I think there are two types of food which any trip to london should take in - the very posh (such as Rules which someone else mentioned, also try le Caprice, maybe have tea at the Ritz or Claridges) and traditional working class food which to me comprises fish & chips, pie & mash and jellied eals.

There is a great Pie & Mash shop at Greenwich market which would be a good one to go to.  Fish and chips are available at lots of places, however my personal favourites are Fishcotheque by Waterloo station, Andys on Northfield Avenue in Ealing and for a much posher lunch J Sheekey.

As London has always benefitted from immigrants from all around the world there are a lot of ethnic cuisines which form part of our great city's food culture.  London has always been a home to people from around the world with skills to offer and money to spend and so genuine "london" food has influences from all over the world.

Bagels (or beighels as they call them) with salt beef on Brick Lane, as well as indian food on Brick Lane, are great treats.

Bar Italia in Soho is another such gem - serving great coffee and pastries and a great example of places set up by post-ware Italian emigrees.

    Good luck with your visit!

  2. If you have the money, then the best place in London to sample tradional English food is Rules Restaurant: http://www.rules.co.uk/  Established in 1798, it is the oldest restaurant in London and specialises in traditional food.

You'll be able to try Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, Pies, Fish and Chips, Hotpots, and old style steamed puddings.

Be warned it is VERY expensive.  Ã‚£18 for the fish and chips which in most chip shops wouldnt cost you more than £5.  But then you are paying for tradition and the freshest ingrediants.

If you want to buy traditional food to take home, the best place is the ground floor of Fortum and Mason's department store.  http://www.fortnumandmason.com/

For a really good English Breakfast, I reccomend The Wolseley http://www.thewolseley.com/ on Picadilly.  This is next door to the Ritz which is a great location for Afternoon Tea if a tad touristy.

  3. i myself haven't been but it sounds like fun. i think that if you are going to go that the best place to look for some REALLY good local food would be at a restaurant.  you might try some sort of a grocery store or coffee shop too.

have a great trip and good luck!!
